1. What Are Social Stories and How Are They Developed?

The characteristics of a successful social story are as follows:
The story should include an introduction, body, and conclusion, and be written to answer the who, what, when, where, why, and how questions.
To speak to the child's perspective, the story should be written directly from the individual's point of view.
It should always use positive language, focusing on desired behaviors rather than undesired ones.
Rather than presenting multiple rules at once, the story should target a single goal behavior and be written in the present tense.
The educator presents the social story immediately before the individual enters the setting where the target behavior is expected, and gradually fades the story from the process until the child performs the skill independently.
2. The Power Card Strategy: Turning Special Interests into an Advantage
Children with autism often have intense and focused areas of interest (cars, dinosaurs, specific cartoon characters, space, etc.). The power card strategy transforms this characteristic feature into a powerful educational tool.
In this strategy, the hero or area of intense interest is identified, and a scenario and power card are prepared and implemented accordingly.
Scenario Phase: A brief story describes how the hero (for example, a favorite cartoon character) demonstrates the correct target behavior when faced with a challenging situation. The rationale for the behavior is emphasized and expressed in no more than five sentences.
Power Card Phase: A summary of the scenario is created. The card includes an image of the hero, a motivating sentence, and the behaviors to be demonstrated — all printed on a small, business-card-sized card.
Implementation: When your child responds incorrectly or struggles, instead of giving a verbal prompt, they are cued to refer to the power card. When your child sees that their beloved hero also follows the rules, they become much more willing to imitate the behavior.
